Stories & Spotlights

A new year brings fresh energy, new goals, and plenty of opportunities to grow. As routines settle back in, it’s normal for students to experience a natural dip in energy, especially in tricky subjects like math, reading, or science. That’s where we come in!

At Michigan Virtual Charter Academy, we help students build confidence, stay curious, and keep learning moving forward all year long. The resources below are designed to give Learning Coaches easy, low-pressure ways to support learning at home without adding stress to your day.

And remember: your first stop for support should always be your MVCA teachers and the tools inside our learning platform. These ideas are simply bonus ways to reinforce what students are already learning.

Foundational Skills Support (Grades K–5)

Math That Makes Sense

Young learners thrive when math feels real. Try using everyday items such as coins, Legos, measuring cups, or even snacks to practice counting, grouping, fractions, and comparisons. Cooking together? Ask your student to double the recipe. Sorting laundry? That’s math, too! And when questions pop up, our math teachers are always happy to share activities that match current lessons.

Building Reading Confidence

Reading gets easier and more fun with practice. Reading aloud together for even 10 minutes a day builds fluency and confidence. Taking turns, using funny voices, or talking about the story keeps kids engaged. Turning on captions during shows is another easy way to reinforce word recognition without extra effort.

Exploring Science at Home

Science is everywhere. Track the weather, grow a plant in a cup, or compare household objects to talk about states of matter, magnets, or life cycles. These small moments help bring classroom science to life.

Middle & High School Support (Grades 6–12)

Tackling Math with Confidence

As math becomes more abstract, breaking problems into smaller steps can make a big difference. If your student is stuck, reviewing earlier skills like fractions before algebra can unlock understanding. Encourage them to attend teacher-led help sessions and ask questions early.

Writing & Research Skills

From essays to research papers, organization is key. MVCA teachers provide outlines and writing frameworks to guide students through the process. Using school-provided research tools helps students find reliable sources, and teachers are always available for feedback before final drafts are due.

Science Success Strategies

For subjects like biology, chemistry, or physics, visuals matter. Teacher-created notes, simulations, and interactive models within our platform help students understand complex ideas. Practicing skills like unit conversions can also boost confidence on assessments.

Helpful Habits for All Grades

  • Check the learning platform daily for updates and feedback
  • Create a consistent, distraction-free workspace
  • Build in movement breaks every 45–60 minutes
  • Reach out to teachers early when questions come up

A Note to Our Learning Coaches

Learning Coaches are a huge part of what makes virtual learning successful. Your role isn’t to teach new lessons or design instruction, but to encourage, support routines, and help students stay on track day to day.

When students, Learning Coaches, and teachers work together, amazing things happen. Thank you for being such an important part of our MVCA community. We’re excited to keep learning, growing, and celebrating successes together this year!
